Why choose OM5?

OM5 multimode fiber solves a problem many growing businesses face: your patch cabinets are full, switches are running out of ports, but bandwidth demands keep climbing. Traditional 100G upgrades use parallel optics with MPO-12 connectivity, consuming eight to twelve fibers per link. In a typical 42U rack with four 48-port switches, that exhausts your entire structured cabling system. Running new cables means disruption and additional costs.

 

OM5 with SWDM (shortwave wavelength division multiplexing) changes the economics entirely. The technology transmits four different light wavelengths (850, 880, 910 and 940 nanometers) simultaneously through one fiber pair. Each wavelength carries 25 Gbit/s, totaling 100 Gbit/s. You use 75% fewer fibers than traditional parallel optics. Practically: where you previously needed eight fibers, two now suffice.

 

This creates immediate operational benefits: Your existing duplex structured cabling remains fully usable. Switches retain available ports for future expansion. LC connectors are preferred in modern installations, representing 95% of new deployments. At 6.25mm width, they fit compact SFP modules and high-density patch panels with 96 ports per rack unit. The click mechanism works intuitively. You hear and feel proper insertion. Downside: the small plastic retention tab breaks under rough handling. 

 

SC connectors offer superior mechanical durability. The square housing with push-pull mechanism withstands harsh conditions better. Storage area networks and Fiber Channel installations often specify SC for proven reliability over 10 year operational lifecycles. However, you get only 48 ports per rack unit versus 96 with LC, double the rack space. 

 

ST connectors with round bayonet coupling appear mainly in legacy installations. The twist-lock connection is mechanically superior and survives vibrations perfectly. Ideal for industrial environments. Choose ST when extending existing ST infrastructure.

Expert tip: avoid the 3 most expensive OM5 mistakes

  1. Assuming OM5 backward compatibility means automatic performance gains
    OM5 cables work technically with all multimode transceivers, but you only benefit from quadruple capacity with SWDM-compatible optics. Check your switch and transceiver datasheets for "100G-SWDM4" or "SWDM-capable" specifications. Without SWDM, OM5 functions as expensive OM4. 
  2. Mixing component quality within a single channel
    Budget pressure sometimes pushes "use cheap patch cords for non-critical links" thinking. But optical link budget includes every component. Premium OM5 trunk cable (0.3dB insertion loss/km) combined with bargain patch cord (0.8dB/m) creates a weak link. A 5-meter cheap jumper contributes 4dB loss - exceeding typical transceiver sensitivity margins. Buy consistent quality throughout your channel or risk intermittent failures during temperature extremes when component specs drift toward tolerances.
  3. Underestimating cable length requirements
    Do not choose too-short cables to save costs. A 1-meter cable between adjacent switch ports seems logical but provides no slack for proper routing via cable management. Your cable runs taut, creating connector stress and making maintenance difficult. 
    General rule: calculate 30% extra length for proper routing and future flexibility. A 2-meter cable where 1.5 meters seems sufficient pays back in maintenance ease and connection reliability over years of operation.
