OM5 fibre optic cables
Network capacity maxed out but no budget for re-cabling? OM5 fiber optic cables quadruple your bandwidth over existing cable routes. SWDM technology delivers 100 Gbit/s through one fiber pair. These plug-and-play cables install in minutes. Read more
Why choose OM5?
OM5 multimode fiber solves a problem many growing businesses face: your patch cabinets are full, switches are running out of ports, but bandwidth demands keep climbing. Traditional 100G upgrades use parallel optics with MPO-12 connectivity, consuming eight to twelve fibers per link. In a typical 42U rack with four 48-port switches, that exhausts your entire structured cabling system. Running new cables means disruption and additional costs.
OM5 with SWDM (shortwave wavelength division multiplexing) changes the economics entirely. The technology transmits four different light wavelengths (850, 880, 910 and 940 nanometers) simultaneously through one fiber pair. Each wavelength carries 25 Gbit/s, totaling 100 Gbit/s. You use 75% fewer fibers than traditional parallel optics. Practically: where you previously needed eight fibers, two now suffice.
This creates immediate operational benefits: Your existing duplex structured cabling remains fully usable. Switches retain available ports for future expansion. Cable management stays manageable because you avoid thick cable bundles. And crucially for budget planning: you upgrade in phases by swapping transceivers only, not ripping out infrastructure.
The lime green cable jacket is instantly recognizable. This color is standardized according IEC 60304 and prevents confusion with aqua OM3, pink OM4 or yellow singlemode. A technician immediately identifies which cable delivers which specification. This prevents errors.
All our OM5 cables are flame retardant (EN 50265-2-1) and halogen-free (EN 50267-2-3). During fire, no toxic gases release that harm people or corrode electronics. Many insurers and fire codes now mandate this for server rooms and data centers, particularly in Europe.
Which connector fits your application?
LC connectors are preferred in modern installations, representing 95% of new deployments. At 6.25mm width, they fit compact SFP modules and high-density patch panels with 96 ports per rack unit. The click mechanism works intuitively. You hear and feel proper insertion. Downside: the small plastic retention tab breaks under rough handling.
SC connectors offer superior mechanical durability. The square housing with push-pull mechanism withstands harsh conditions better. Storage area networks and Fiber Channel installations often specify SC for proven reliability over 10 year operational lifecycles. However, you get only 48 ports per rack unit versus 96 with LC, double the rack space.
ST connectors with round bayonet coupling appear mainly in legacy installations. The twist-lock connection is mechanically superior and survives vibrations perfectly. Ideal for industrial environments. Choose ST when extending existing ST infrastructure.
Complete fiber optic solutions
Complete network infrastructures require more than firbre optic patch cables alone. For inter-building connections or longer distances, deploy singlemode fiber optic cables that span kilometers. Within your rack, combine OM5 with essential fiber optic accessories:
- media converters bridge copper and fiber during phased migrations
- SFP mini-GBIC modules configure switch ports flexibly for different speeds
- splice cassettes organize permanent connections with bend radius protection
- patch panels centralize distribution points with cable management
- fiber couplers enable emergency repairs or adapter between connector types
Reliable installations demand professional fiber optic tools:
- precision strippers removing coating without damaging the fragile core
- kevlar scissors for strength members
- test equipment measuring signal loss
- fusion splicers creating permanent connections below 0.05dB loss
- cleaning supplies, because 80% of fiber failures trace to contaminated connectors
