When establishing an internet connection, it's essential to attach a networking cable to a connector or a wall socket. Inside the cable, you'll notice that the wires have colored shielding, indicating the order in which the wire pairs should be connected. But what is the correct sequence?
Standard Construction of Networking Cables
The primary reason for color coding in networking cables is to ensure that there is no confusion, and the networking cable is connected correctly. This is crucial for a well-functioning network and optimal data traffic.
UTP cabling consists of 8 wires, each with a different color. The colors are always the same, making it easier to connect the networking cable correctly.
Color Code A or B
There are two different networking cable color codes: the EIA/TIA-568A, also known as A standard, and the EIA/TIA-568B, the B standard. In Europe, it's common to use the B standard (568B) color code. Therefore, you connect the wires in an RJ45 connector or on a wall socket according to the color code of the B standard. This color order is as follows:
1. White-Orange
2. Orange
3. White-Green
4. Blue
5. White-Blue
6. Green
7. White-Brown
8. Brown
Color code for RJ45 connectors
When connecting a networking cable to wall sockets, adhere to the color order according to the B standard. However, it's essential to pay attention to the numbering sequence indicated on the wall socket. In the junction boxes in our assortment, the order of connection is 5 – 4 – 1 – 2 – 3 – 6 – 7 – 8.
As you can see, the wire pairs need to be placed in a different order. The representation on the wall socket always determines the order of the wires.
- White-Blue (5)
- Blue (4)
- White-Orange (1)
- Orange (2)
- White-Green (3)
- Green (6)
- White-Brown (7)
- Brown (8)
What is the Color Order for a Crossover Cable?
For a crossover cable, the B standard (568B) is used on one end, and the A standard (568A) is used on the other end. The color order according to the A standard is as follows:
- White-Green (3)
- Green (6)
- White-Orange (1)
- Blue (4)
- White-Blue (5)
- Orange (2)
- White-Brown (7)
- Brown (8)
